Make broadband coverage nationwide - Buhari orders NCC



President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, October 22, directed the Nigeria Telecommunications Commission to ensure that Nigeria as a whole is fully covered by the broadband deployment programme.



The vice chairman of the commission, Umar Dambatta while speaking at the first-leg of the Braodband Engagement Forum for stakeholders in northern region, Dambatta said the president's directive is aimed at enhancing the socio-economic development of Nigeria through telecommunication technology. Dambatta said the country has been divided into seven zones - northwest, northeast, north central, south south, southeast, southwest and Lagos zones.
According to Dambatta, the coverage would effective and equitable broadband service deployment across the country. Highlighting the benefits of benefits of broadband services, Dambatta said the process would allow for gradual transformation in the areas of health, education, transportation, socio-economic development, as well as transparency and openness in governance. “The licence is very cheap; it is as cheap as N2.5 million. “So, whatever we are going to do here today, whatever conclusions we are going to draw, these conclusions must revolve around what we are going to do in our own right, as a people interested in pervasive telecommunication services, as well as how we can make those services available everywhere, and at the same time," he said. Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that internet users increased marginally to 98.3 million in 2017.
The NCC made this disclosure in its Monthly Internet Subscribers Data for December 2017 on its website on Thursday, February 8, in Abuja. According to the data, Airtel, MTN and Glo gained more internet subscribers during the month in review while 9mobile was the big loser.
