Zika virus detected in second Indian state

India’s Zika outbreak is spreading, with officials saying Sunday that the mosquito-borne virus has been detected in the western state of Gujarat after nearly 150 cases were reported this year in neighbouring Rajasthan. Health authorities in Gujarat said a woman tested positive for Zika and was treated at a state hospital in the capital Ahmedabad, the first confirmed case outside Rajasthan this year. “Only one case has been found so far. We are taking all precautions,” Gujarat Commissioner of Health, Jayanti Ravi, told AFP on Sunday. The state health department has rallied hundreds of doctors and medical personnel to perform emergency screenings for Zika, including more than 250 pregnant women with fevers. Gujarat, which borders Rajasthan to the south, has been fumigating public areas in an effort to kill the mosquitos that carry the diseases. Health authorities in Rajasthan have detected 147 cases of Zika since September, officials say. Almost 440,000 people were under sur

Keke Queens: Pains, Gains And Future

Keke Queens: Pains, Gains And Future Life at Canoe bus stop in Ajao Estate, Lagos state is like every most parts of Lagos city. People hurry to their destinations; cars struggle in the bumpy ride on the potholed road and there are people who haggle prices at the mini-market situated close to the road. On the other side of the busy road is a filling station and yellow and black coated tricycles (popularly known as keke all over Nigeria and in Lagos, Keke Marwa after the former military governor, Mohammed Buba Marwa who was also the first to introduce the tricycle in the 90s) arranged in an orderly manner with each tricycle driver, sitting and waiting for his turn to “load”. Despite the chaos, the atmosphere surrounding the keke park is calm save for the unending burst of Lagosians hurrying to board the tricycles. Since the ban on motorcycles in different parts of the country, keke has become for many Nigerians, one of the easiest means of transportation because of its abili

US synagogue attack 'inhuman act of violence' - Pope

Image
Pope Francis / AFP PHOTO / MUNIR UZ ZAMAN Pope Francis on Sunday called a deadly attack on a synagogue in the United States “an inhuman act of violence”, expressing his “closeness to the Jewish community”. A man suspected of bursting into the synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday during a baby-naming ceremony and gunning down 11 people has been charged with murder, in the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in recent US history. “We are all, in truth, wounded by this inhuman act of violence,” Francis said at the end of the Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square. “May the Lord help us put out the flames of hate that develop in our societies, strengthening the sense of humanity, respect for life, moral and civil values and holy fear of God”. Suspect Robert Bowers, 46, reportedly yelled “All Jews must die” as he sprayed bullets into the Tree of Life synagogue during Sabbath services before exchanging fire with police, in an attack that also wounded six people. Guardiola urges City to stay focused ahead of Spurs test

Guardiola urges City to stay focused ahead of Spurs test Manchester City’s Spanish manager Pep Guardiola / AFP PHOTO / PAUL ELLIS Pep Guardiola has challenged Manchester City to prove they are still the Premier League’s preeminent force as the champions face a key test against title rivals Tottenham on Monday. Since losing to Lyon in the Champions League in September, Guardiola’s side have gone on a seven-game unbeaten run in all competitions. City have won six of those matches, with the only draw a goalless stalemate against Liverpool that ranked as an impressive result given their struggles at Anfield last season. An eye-catching 3-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday prompted Guardiola to hail the performance as City’s best this season. Given City had just thrashed Burnley 5-0, while also enjoying a 5-0 win at Cardiff and a 6-1 demolition of Huddersfield this term, that ranks as high praise from the Spaniard. But Guardiola knows much ster

N. Korea Hospital Director Rejects Warmbier Torture Charges

Image
The director of the North Korean hospital that treated Otto Warmbier, the US student who died after being held in the country, rejected fresh allegations that he was tortured in custody. The 22-year-old was jailed in the North for more than a year and was released in a comatose state in 2017 but died shortly after returning home. The exact cause of his death remains unknown but a recent US media report claimed there was new evidence that he was beaten by the regime. The director of the Pyongyang Friendship Hospital — which treated Warmbier — slammed the claims as a “total distortion of the truth” in a statement carried by the North’s official KCNA news agency late Saturday. “The American doctors who came to the DPRK to help Warmbier’s repatriation acknowledged that his health indicators were all normal and submitted a letter of assurance to our hospital,” it said, using North Korea’s official acronym. “Now the question is: what is the ulterior motive of those American do

Chinese loan: How Buhari, 51 other presidents exposed Africa to ridicule – Falana Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari and the other 51 African Heads of State exposed the continent to global ridicule in the campaign to stop $100bn illicit financial flow from Africa by begging China for $60bn infrastructure loan. A statement sent to DAILY POST on Sunday by the Spokesman of Falana and Falana & Co, Tayo Soyemi, quoted the Senior lawyer as saying this at the African NGO Forum which held in Banjul, The Gambia during the week. Falana said the Chinese loan was unnecessary; regretting that it could strengthen the ongoing substitution of European colonisation with Chinese colonisation in Africa. He said: “It is regrettable that the heads of States of 52 African countries were at Beijing, China last month to beg for a $60 billion loan for the so-called infrastructural development of Africa for the next years. “The loan is totally un

IS repels US-backed forces from east Syria holdout The Islamic State group has ousted a US-backed coalition of Kurdish and Arab forces from its holdout in eastern Syria, killing dozens of fighters, a monitoring group said Sunday. A Syrian Democratic Forces commander, asking not to be named, confirmed the SDF retreat from the Hajin pocket near the Iraqi border seven weeks into an offensive. The SDF, who are backed by air strikes of the US-led coalition, launched its campaign to retake the IS holdout on September 10. But they have faced a fierce fightback from the jihadists, including under the cover of sandstorms, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says. “In counterattacks since Friday to Sunday dawn, IS has taken back all positions to which the SDF had advanced inside the Hajin pocket,” the monitoring group’s chief Rami Abdel Rahman said. The Observatory reported 72 SDF fighters killed, as IS took advantage of the storm that hampered coalition air
