OPINION] The Spirit of the Jews in Squirrel Hill - Reuben Abati

Image
What was assaulted in Squirrel view, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States on Saturday, October 27, was not just the 11 persons that died and the six injured, or  strictly the Jewish community in the United States. It was an assault on the entire humanity itself.  It was terrible. It was horrendous. It stands condemned by all right-thinking members of the human community. We note for record purposes, that the children of YHWH have been victims of hate, terrorism and intimidation all through  history , but a gun-man, Robert Bowers , 46, walking into a synagogue on Sabbath day, wielding guns and hate in his heart and gunning down innocent persons and injuring others is the height of the terrorism and intolerance that a chosen race has suffered over time. The people of YWWH could be terrorized and slaughtered but it is written in human memory that they will forever live. But even that is no lasting consolation. The world must be made safe for all - regardless...

Experts task FG, others to give priority to human capital development

Image
S ome  experts have tasked the Federal Government and other stakeholders to give priority to the development of human capital, capable of driving operations in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Speaking at the opening of the 3rd Africa Oil & Gas Talent Summit (AOGS), in Lagos at the weekend, Chairman, AOGS Advisory Council, Engr. Felix Amieyeofori, said this has become necessary, especially as, ‘people are the real assets’ in any economy. Amieyeofori said the nation’s oil and gas industry needs skillful human capital to drive operations while delivering value to stakeholders. The chairman who regretted that Nigeria has been ranked as one of the least nations in human capital index stated: “Nigeria ranked 152 out of 157 countries on the World Bank 2018 Human Capital Index list. Nigeria shared the bottom of the index with countries like Chad, South Sudan, Niger, Mali, and Liberia. “Of the 85.08 million labour force by 3rd quarter 2017, only 7.14 percent work in any ...

BPE to raise N300b for Budget 2018 funding

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) will generate over N300 billion from privatisation and commercialisation to support the 2018 budget financing, its Director-General Dr Alex Okoh said yesterday. Okoh spoke in Lagos at the Stakeholders Media Interactive Forum organised by the Enterprise and the Stakeholders Engagement Committee of the National Council on Privatisation (SEC-NCP). The BPE plans to generate N300 billion into the 2018 budget through the sale of some national assets, such as  the Afam Power Plant in Rivers State, Geregu, Calabar and Omotosho National Independent Power Projects, re-privatisation of the Yola Distribution Company, River Basin Development Authorities and the National Parks. Some of the transactions in the pipeline include the concession of Warri Old Port, the reconcession of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, the sale of Afam Power Plant and three National Independent Power Projects. Budget 2018: What do the housing measures mean?

Image
More help for first-time buyers and plans to create more homes on the High Street have been announced in the Budget. Most first-time buyers of shared ownership properties will now no longer pay stamp duty, under the measures unveiled. Chancellor Philip Hammond said Britain's housing market needs to be fixed, adding it was key to boosting UK productivity and pushing up living standards. The UK is facing a shortage of housing. The number of homes on the market  is at a 10-year low  and  fewer people  are taking out mortgages. So what has the chancellor said he is going to do about it? Was there any help for first-time buyers? In last year's Autumn Budget, the  chancellor abolished stamp duty  - a tax you pay if you buy property or land - for first-time buyers buying a home worth up to £300,000. It has so far helped 121,500 people, the chancellor said, and the number of first-time buyers is at an 11-year high. Now, stamp duty will also be a...

LaLiga: Real Madrid disappoint Conte, make new choice

Image
Former Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte’s move to Real Madrid is now in doubt. Real Madrid have made a shock decision shifting their attention to Santiago Solari as the favourite to replace Julen Lopetegui. Lopetegui who took over from Zinedine Zidane just four months, is set to be sacked following Sunday’s 5-1 defeat against Barcelona on Sunday which capped a miserable start to the new season. Conte has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea back in August and had been linked with a move to the Bernabeu But his hopes of securing the big job has hit the rock, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. The Italians time at the Stamford Bridge was ultimately undermined by a series of arguments with Chelsea’s board. Solari is now emerging as a genuine candidate to take charge of Real Madrid. Lupetegui, however, surprised a core of first team stars by presiding over training on Monday. The former Spain coach joined the Champions League holders having been dismissed by the Sp...
